Your third picture down looks like ...there is a area of denser.... less soft leather in 2 bubbly areas....possibly across the shoulders of the hide? That could stand a little more work. I am assuming...

you do a running stitch thru the hide to get the twine on the hide. then you hook it around the nails.cThen you add the keeper twine all the way around the frame...Can you see the keeper twine running...

hphorses: I would not use any metal tools or a stake on such a thin hide. I would use sandpaper or volcanic pumice only. I tan a lot of sheep hides and metal tools and stakes tend to bust through...
